Assessment and Testing

Neurocognitive Evaluation/Assessment

A neurocognitive assessment can be thought of as a behavioral and emotional MRI of your brain. Although multiple areas of the brain are thought to be involved in processes such as memory and language functioning, certain areas play a more dominant role. In a neurocognitive assessment you are administered a series of tests and asked to perform a variety of tasks that have been found to tap into particular areas of your brain. Through this process it is possible to identify potential areas of deficit and strength, possible causes of mental and emotional problems, and the testing results helpf guide appropriate treatment. This type of evaluation is appropriate in the following cases:

  • To detect signs of dementia or other mental/cognitive problems.
  • For mental/cognitive problems associated with autoimmune disorders, such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, and Multiple sclerosis.
  • For mental/cognitive problems following traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, stroke, long-term use of medications, and chronic pain.
  • For clearance of surgery for seizure disorder, epilepsy, deep brain stimulation.
  • To tease apart and differentiate between diagnoses or causes to a problem, for example to distinguish between memory problems related to dementia or due to other conditions, such as depression, stress, anxiety, or brain injury.
